Retention
 
  • Freshman Summer Institute

Incoming freshmen participate in a summer program designed to enhance the transition from high school to a research-based education and to assist students in developing learning behaviors that will help them excel at Caltech.  Participants conduct research with mentors, write research papers, and give professional research talks.

 
  • Excel Retreat
Freshmen participate in a weekend retreat at the end of 1st term designed to further foster the community of scholars, preview 2nd and 3rd term coursework, draft four-year academic plans, provide information on summer research, outreach, and conference opportunities.
 
  • Academic Support & Guidance
Proactive academic monitoring with appropriate follow-up, advising, referrals, graduate school guidance, etc.
 
  • Community Building
Activities to foster the sense of community among underrepresented groups on campus such as lunches, Midnight Study Breaks, Welcome Back BBQ, and Spring Banquet.
 
Recognition
 
  • Celebration of Excellence
Recognition program and dinner designed to highlight academic achievement, graduates, and diversity commitment of students, faculty, alumni, and staff.
 
Research
 
  • Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship

Prestigious national program focused on increasing the number of underrepresented students who will pursue Ph.D.s in core fields in the arts and sciences.  Fellowships include mentoring, research stipends, and travel support (conferences, graduate school visits, etc.).
 
  • MURF (coordinated by the Student-Faculty Programs Office)

Summer undergraduate research program for talented non-Caltech students.  The MURF program aims to increase the representation of underrepresented students in science and engineering graduate programs and to make Caltech’s programs more visible to students not traditionally exposed to Caltech.
